Product Details

A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.

A stunning and unusual Chelsea porcelain figural fob from the Georgian (ca1830) era! This wonderful piece, which is made of porcelain and sterling silver, depicts a painted colonial era drummer. The man, who is wearing a hat and jacket, is sitting on a green stump and has a drum resting on his lap. The base of the has the French words “TOUJOURS GAY,” which translates to “always happy”. The painted detail of the image is simply wonderful, with textured hair, a charming face and a patterned jacket. The underside of the fob has the script monogram "BRVLE" with what appears to be a fire. On the back of the man is a small silver ring, which would be perfect for hanging from a long chain. Porcelain fobs are very fragile and have become unusual to find because of their delicate nature. This one is particularly stunning and would make a lovely addition to any collection!

Measurements: The overall height of the fob measures 1 1/8" at the tallest point, and a little less than 1/2" at the widest point. The fob plaque has a diameter of a little less than 5/8" wide. The "o" ring has a diameter of 1/4".

Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides a couple very minor chips and wear to the paint, there is no serious damage to the porcelain fob.
